생율
오늘은 밤이야기 (야화가 아님!)
역시 가을은 수확의 계절.
한 블럭 떨어진 어느 집 마당에 제법 자란 밤나무 한 그루
밤들이 주렁 달려있고 땅에도 많이 떨어져 있군요.
다람쥐, 오파썸, 너구리등등이 땅에 떨어져 있는 밤들은
벌써 한 차두 해 갔나 봄니다.
나도 질새라
집 주인 허락을 맡고 한 빨래통 잡아왔내요. ㅋㅋ
하나씩 까보니 제법 토실 토실 알밤이 하나씩 들어 있군요.
보통 밤송이 하나에 두세개 들어 있는데,
한 톨만 (아주 드물게 두톨) 먹을만치 큼니다 (see the photo below. Click to enlarge).
다 수확해 보니 111개나 되요. :-)
TV 보면서 겉껍질, 속껍질을 까니 노란 속살이 앙증마자요.
오! 이것이 바로 생율 밤이로구나!!
하나 위/아래 이빨 사이에 넣고 힘을 살짝 가하니,
명쾌한 소리와 함께, 그대로 두쪽으로 부서지네요.
그리 달지는 않지만 아주 크런치하군요.
오도독 오도독 얌냠...
신기하게도, 110개 벌래를 먹지 않았어요.
아내도 신나라 하며 후딱 재료를 준비해, 약식과 삼개탕을 만들었읍니다.
보람있는 하루 였어요.
이렇게 필드에서 먹거리를 마련하면 죄끔 뿌듯함을 느낌니다.

so beautiful bug-11: fritillary butterfly
Below is a photo of 'great spangled fritillary' butterfly.
They belong to Family Nymphalidae (Order Lepidoptera).
It is widely found in the Eastern US, but rare in the midwest.
They are known to overwinter as a caterpillar. Poor baby!!
An interesting feature of the members in the "Family Nymphalidae" is that they look like having four legs. How? This is because the front legs are tiny, thus not clearly visible. Thus they are also called four-footed butterflies.

the longest name of the city
One of my hobbies is to browse the printed maps. I love maps. It does not mean I am a traveler. Quite contrary, I don't like traveling far and long, as I feel insecure in strange places. But I love browsing maps.
While I was skimming the map of State of New Mexico, I found an interesting name in Southern NM.
"Truth or Consequences"
What the heck is that?
This is a city in the state of New Mexico. For short, it is indicated as 'T or C'.
So how did it get this bizarre name?
The city's original name was 'Hot Springs". Then it changed to 'T or C' after a famous radio game show in 1950. Well, click the link below for more information.

개강
여름이 아직 채 가시기 전 가을학기가 시작 되었군요. Campus is again fully vibrant and full of students. 곧곧에 개강 파티 분이기가 감지... 여기도 신입생 환영회 같으걸 하는지 모르것네??
:-( Oh. I feel terrible that I cannot write Korean with correct grammar and spell. )-:
첫 시간에 들어가니 새로운 얼굴들 + 낮익은 (those who took my other classes) 얼굴들이 앉아 있군요. ㅋㅋ. 느그들은 인자 주겄다... 복창해라, "주겄다".
에고, 가르치는 나도 죽것내요!
가을학기 개강과 더불어 오래동안 기다리던 football season 도 시작되어 만은 사람들 마음을 설래게합니다. ^^
왜 미국은 8월에 새학년을 시작할까?? 한국처럼 만물이 생기를 띠기 시작하는 봄이 새학년의 개념과 잘 맞을 터인디. 혹 아시는 분?

TBC 유품
박정희대통령 저격 (1979년 시월) 이후, 전두환/노태우씨가 주축을 이룬 신군부가 국가의 모든 권력을 힘으로 장악하면서, 언론 통폐합의 일환으로 방송국 몇 개가 하루아침에 공중분해 되었다. 그중 하나가 동양방송국 (TBC) 이었는데.... 마지막 방송을 보내면서 아나운서들의 눈물섞인 멘트가 아직도 기억에 생생.
서랍을 뒤지다 TBC유품이 나왔다.
고딩때, 아마도 "장미선의 두시에 대이트" 라는 프로그램이라 기억되는데..
그 당시엔, 엽서에 시나 사연과 함께 신청곡을 써보내면, 게중에 시간이 허락되는데로 몇개를 뽑아 시나 사연을 읽어주고 신청곡을 방송에 내 보네 주었다. 그리고 방송이 끝날 무렵에 한-두개를 뽑아 경품도 주곤 했는데...
이런! 내 엽서가 뽑혔다!!
방과 후, 방송국에 찾아가, 경품으로 위에 보이는 편지꽂이와 책 두권을 받았다. (그 중 한권은 '뿌리 깊은 나무'라는 수필집이라 기억됨). 책들은 오래전 없어졌는데, 편지꽂이는 아직도 내게 남아있다, 역사의 한 증인으로.....

so beautiful bugs-10: 쭐쭐이와 땡땡이
여느 한국집 뒷마당에 흔이 심고 먹는 야채로는 부추, 깬닢, 파, 고추, 호박 (squash), 오이등을 들 수 있겠다.
근데, 쫌 가꿔서 맛 나게 먹을려는 '한여름밤의 꿈'은 종종 nightmare로 변하는데, 여러 야생동물과 나쁜(?) 곤충들이 그 주범이라...
게중 어떤 놈들은 '천사의 탈'을 쓰고 있는데 (look innocent), 예로 striped cucumber beetles (we called them 쭐쭐이)와 spotted cucumber beetles (땡땡이)를 봅시다.
The above photo was taken in the morning when the flower was wide open. Luckily I found one 호박꽃 that has both 쭐쭐이 & 땡땡이. As you can see in the photo, they have characteristic stripes or dots on the back (= elytra), thus they are named. These beetles are medium-sized (0.5-1 cm long).
Although they don't look so threatening, they transmit bacterial pathogens, which infect and cause wilting (and eventual death) of plants. Particular host plants are cucumbers and squashes, ㅠㅠ. More info can be found in many websites (e.g., http://www.ghorganics.com/CucumberBeetles.htm)
혹 이런놈들 보이면 그저 손으로 잡아 없에는게 (manual insecticide) 맛있는 건강 여름 밥상을 위해 상책일듯... No mercy!! 몇마리 잡아없엔다고 이넘들이 멸종될 가능성은 거의 zero...
Pros of the manual insecticide:
1. no harmful chemical in your food (real organic).
2. you have a chance to observe the nature.

They belong to Order Coleoptera: Family Chrysomelidae.
