날씨: 48-53°F, cloudy

지난 일년동안 계획했던 이사를 드디어 단행했다.
미국에서 약 25년 살면서, 아마 최소 12번은 이사를 한 것 같은데 ㅠㅠ.

하지만 이번 이사는 특별한 의미가 있다.  집짓기를 처음부터 우리 부부가 계획해서 실행에 옮겨 끝을 보았으니.. .

다 끝내고 보니 물론 미흡한 면이 군데군데 보이지만, 이만하면 OK.
앞으로 새 보금자리에 행복을 담는 일이 더 힘들 지 않을까?

예수의 염색체는 몇개?

며칠 영하로 곤두박치던 온도가 오늘부턴 좀 풀리는 갑다.

오래 전 4 컷짜리 신문만화 (Curtis) 에 실린  것인데..

두 개구장이 형제는 부모따라 마다 교회를 다닌다.

하루는 요녀석이 목사에게 물어본다.

Curstis: "목사님, 아담도 배꼽이 있나요?"
목사: ???
Curstis: "있잖아요. 아기들은 엄마 몸에서 자라 나오니까 다 배꼽이 있는데, 아담은 하나님이 만드셨잖아요?"

목사: 할말을 잃고 ....


비슷한 예기로,
오늘 차를 타고 오다가, 갑자기 "예수의 염색체는 몇개 였을까?"라는 장난스런 질문이 떠올랐다.
사람의 염색체는 전부 46개로, 23개는 엄마의 난자로 부터, 그리고 나머지 23개는 아버지의 정자로 부터 받아 46개 (23 쌍)의 염색체를 가진 수정란이 엄마의 자궁속에서 태아로 발전해서 정상적인 아기가 태어나는 것인데,

Bible 에 따르면, 예수는 정상적인 방법으로 생겨난 아기가 아니니, 마리아로 부터만 받은 23개의 염색체만 갖고 있어야 한다는 결론인데, 이런 경우 야예 난자가 발생이 안되던가 완전 기형아이거나... (곤충의 경우엔 수정 안 된 알이 정상적인 개체로 발달하는 종류도 드물게 있지만..)

근데, 남자로 태어 날려면 아버지로 부터 Y 염색체를 받아야 하는데,
Bible 에 따르면 예수는 남자임에 틀림없고.

허 참!!!  이거 어찌 해석을 해야하나 ?!%&
굳이 따지자면, 하나님이 남자란 말인가?

재미난 말들

늦가을로 접어드니, 쌀쌀해 지는 날씨와 함께 화사로왔던 단풍도 점점 빛을 바래고 집 뜨락엔 낙엽이 수북히 싸이고 있다.  '오 핸리'의 '마지막 잎새'가 생각나는 계절이다.  따끈한 정종 한잔도...
지난번 길을 가다가 신나게 굴러가는 낙엽들을 보고, 그 모양이 마치 "걸음아! 날 살려라!" 하는것 같아서 낄낄 거리고 웃었더니, 엽지기 (아내)가 뭔 사춘기 소녀냐고 핀잔을 준다.  뭐 웃긴 건 웃긴 거지.  남 해치는 것도 아닌 감성표현을 궂이 억누르면서까지 살 필요가 있을까....

올 해도 flu shot을 맞아야 할지 고민 중이다.  

아내와 차를 타고 가다가 가끔 재미난 말들을 떠올리곤, '그 어원이 뭘까?' 같이 생각해 보면 재미가 있다.  단풍이 '울긋불긋'하길래, "'울긋'은 어떤 의미일까?" 로 시작한 것이 다른 비슷한 말들을 끄집어 내게 되었다.

올 겨울 처음 영하의 온도가 예상되는 늦가을이다.

또 학교 총기사건으로 학교가 피로 물들었다.
네바다주 Sparks 시 (주도인 Reno 의 위성도시).  Lake Tahoe 근처에 위치한  Nevada 의 또 다른 도박/관광도시.  아주 오래전 한 번 지나가 본적이 있는 곳이다.

이 도시의 한 중학교에서 이번엔 12살 짜리가 선생님 한 분과 두 학생을 쏘고 자살한 사건이다.
선생님은 veteran 으로 전쟁터에서 살아 돌아왔는데, 어이없게도 일터에서 유명을 달리했으니, 보이지 않는 내부 의 적이 더 무서운 것임엔 틀림이 없다.

학기도 벌써 중간 지점까지 오니 아이들도 시험치르느라 정신이 없다.
평가.
제도 안에서 살아가려면 어쩔 수 없이 남을 평가해야하고 또 평가를 받아야 한다.  그것이 삶을 고통스럽게 한다.  저기 창공을 푸닥거리며 날아가는 참새의 삶이 내 것보다 더 못할 것이 없는데, 쉬이 그 짜여진 틀을 깨지 못함은 어인 까닭인지...

문 닫은 정부

콩그레스의 의견 불일치로 예산집행이 불가하여, 10월 1일 자로  오바마행정부가 쓸 돈이 압류된 상태가 되었다.  항상 그렇지만 쌍방의 의견은 다들 그 이유가 그럴듯 하다.  그래서 무지한 궁민들은 했갈린다.  어느 제도든 혜택을 받는 쪽은 지지하고, 그 반대 쪽은 반대하고...

많은 federal employees 는 무급인데, 정책 결정의 주인공들은 (대통령, 국회의원 등등) 꾸준이 월급을 챙긴다는 사실. 자기들도 고통분담을 해야 하지않나??

Congress has one key duty in the Constitution -- pass spending bills that fund the government. If it doesn't, most functions of government -- from funding agencies to paying out small business loans and processing passport requests -- grinds to a halt. 2. Why does it have to pass a spending bill in the middle of the year?

It may be the middle of the calendar year, but the government's fiscal year runs from October 1 to September 30.

3. What was the holdup?

House Republicans insist any new spending bill include provisions to either defund, derail or otherwise chip away at Obamacare. Senate Democrats are just as insistent that it doesn't.

4. How is Obamacare tied to the spending bill?

The health care law isn't directly tied to funding the government, but it's being used as a bargaining chip. A group of Republicans, led by freshman Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, believe the president's signature domestic policy achievement is so bad for the country that it is worth disrupting government funding to undercut it.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the actual name of the law, requires all Americans to have health insurance. 7. What happened with the spending bill over the weekend?

Depends on how long it lasts. If it's just a few days, the hit might not be severe. But the total economic impact is likely to be at least 10 times greater than the simple calculation of lost wages of federal workers, said Brian Kessler, economist with Moody's Analytics. His firm estimates that a three- to four-week shutdown would cost the economy about $55 billion.

14. How will this affect me?

In ways big and small. The mail will continue to come. The military will continue to fight. And Social Security checks will continue to be paid.

But if you need a federal loan to buy a house, you'll have to wait. If you want a gun permit or a passport, that won't happen anytime soon.

15. Will a shutdown kill Obamacare?

No. Most of the money for Obamacare comes from new taxes and fees, as well as from cost cuts to other programs like Medicare and other types of funding that will continue despite the government shutdown.

16. Will the president get paid during a shutdown?

Yes. His salary -- $400,000 -- is considered mandatory spending. It won't be affected.

17. What about House and Senate members?

They'll keep drawing checks, too. The 27th Amendment prevents any Congress from changing its own pay.

A CNN/ORC International poll that came out Monday found that 46% will blame congressional Republicans if the government closes its doors, with 36% saying the president would be more responsible and 13% pointing fingers at both.

Ah yes, that's the next battle brewing. Remember that time when you maxed out your credit card? That's what the debt limit is all about. The U.S. is on the verge of maxing out its $16.699 trillion credit card. And the president must ask Congress to raise the country's credit limit.

But the debt ceiling debacle won't come to a head until October 17. Perhaps it's best to deal with one showdown at a time.

The House and Senate did agree on one thing. They finalized legislation Monday to keep paying troops in the event of a shutdown.

무화과가 익어간다.
이사 올 때 그전 집에 있던 것을 파와서 심었는데, 몇 년 전부터 왕성하게 열매를 달기 시작하여 좋은 간식거리를 제공해 준다. 제 때 따지 않으면, 당분이 발효가 되서 초가 되니, 신맛이 별로 유쾌하지 않다. 단 맛이 있는 고로 다른 곤충들도 끌어 들이고, 새들도 쪼아 먹고, ㅠㅠ.

 그냥 과일로 먹기도 하고, 반 건조시켜 쫄깃한 맛을 즐기기도 하고, 쨈으로 만들기도 한다.

잎 또는 과일을 따면 하얀 즙 (latex) 이 상처에서 나오는데, 민감한 사람은 알러지반응 (skin irritation) 을 보이기도 한다. 하지만 이 fig latex 는 또한 사마귀를 없애는 민간요법으로 쓴다고 한다 (인용논문:  Int J Dermatol. 2007 May;46(5):524-526).

무화과는 꽃 없이 열매가 달린다해서 그런 이름이 붙었는데,
실재로는 꽃이 안 보여서 그렇지 없는 것은 아니다. 꽃의 수분은 전적으로 Agaonid wasp 라는 아주 조그만 벌에 의해서만 이루어 지는데, "Fig-Agaonid" 의 mutualistic co-evolution 은 자연계의 하나의 신비이다.

가뭄에 잘 견디고, Persia, Western Asia (터키)가 원산지로 알려져 있는데, 지금은 많이 번져서 아주 춥지 않은 지역이면 잘 자란다고 한다.

무화과는 Christian Bible 에 가끔 등장하는데, Adam-Eve 가 몸을 가릴때 무화과나무 잎사귀를 썼다하고.
