March Madness 2011
March Madness is Finally over!!!
U. Conn became a Men's Champ, and TAMU grabbed the Women's trophy. Lots of upset in Men's competition was notable this year, as none of the first- and second-seed teams did not make the 'Final Four'.
In the case of Women's competition, U. Conn was the most favorite, but the team succumbed to second-seed Norte Dame at the semifinal game. TAMU, the school that I attended for my graduate degree, finally beat Baylor at Elite Eight game; they lost three times against Baylor during regular season. Then they marched to the championship game.
In sport games, I love to see upsets. There are no absolute winners or losers in life. Those who think are winners should bear in mind that they can be a loser someday. So be humble.
Those who think are losers, should be excited and learned from these upsets. They need to diagnose their weakness and work harder to overcome such obstacles. Someday, they will make an UPSET.

쿼터 (statehood quarters) 모으기
From 1999 to 2008, the Department of Treasury (재무부) introduced statehood quarters. Five new quarters came out every year, in the order of states joining the federation. So eastern states were first, and then western states and Hawaii, Alaska were the last. Each quarter has a unique design (or symbols) representing the state.
Many people including us collected these coins. Whenever we got the changes, we looked for the new quarters, which were displayed in the collection board.
The project (I thought) was over, so was our collection. However, I see that the project is moving on the US territories (Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, US virgin islands, etc).
Somehow it is a smart (or sneaky) idea of business. The government makes money by selling the money, as people buy the money to keep (not use) it. In other words, the coins turned into a merchandise.

The King's stammering
The Best Picture: "The King's Speech" was awarded Oscar's best picture this year. Before the ceremony, I did not know about this film (I personally liked the "Winter's Bone"). So for the sake of my curiosity, I went to see this movie this weekend. Although it was released a while ago, the theater room was a bit filled with people, perhaps because this film gained some attention due to the award.
Stammering: Why do some people stammer (stutter)? I recollect that one of my classmates in the middle school had this type of speech problem. He was a smart kid and always in the top three in my class.
The cause: As seen in the movie, stammering might mostly come from the psychological trauma during early childhood. Family feud, frustration, pressure from siblings, peers or teachers, particularly at the ages at which language skills develop, causes kids to become anxious about disfluency. Impatience makes things worse, as the king's father did in the movie.

Speech anxiety:
Nearly most of people have an anxiety of public speech. Why not? It is natural. As part of my job duties, I have to stand in front of a bunch of students and deliver the lectures. The very first class was very scary, particularly because my spoken language skill (broken English) was still awkward. I stammered on some occasion, because I could not find right words at those moments, although I practiced the lecture several times before I went to the lecture room.
As part of the class activity, students are asked to make oral presentations. Some of them have shaky voice and stammer due to the anxiety. Only experience will relieve them from this type of stress.

Natural history of the winged insects is still controversial. The link below might give some hint. hm~~.

AD/BC
기원전 (Before Christ, BC), 기원후 (Anno Domini, AD):
(Before the Common Era), C.E.
