백번째 글

드디어 천일야화의 1/10 지점에 도착했다.
뭐 대단한 일이라고. ㅋㅋ
그런대도 뭔가 의미를 부여하고 싶은 느낌은 어쩔 수 없다.

오늘은 윤년의 윤일이다.
오늘이 생일인 사람들에게는 참 의미있는 날이 되겠다.
또 오늘은 여자가 먼저 프로포즈해도 된다는 날이라고 들었다.

어제 PBS American Experience에서 'Amish Life' 를 다루었다.
Amish 를 많이 들어 보았지만, 좀더 깊이 그들의 종교 철학과 삶을 이해하는데 도움이 되었다.
요즘 같은 새상에 bare necessities 만 가지고 행복하게 살기도 쉽지 않을텐데....
이탈하고져 하는 젊은이들이 종종 있지만 (기회는 주어진다고 함, via anabaptism), 90% 는 머무른다고 한다.  요즘 같이 매우 세속화된 종교인들, 한번쯤 꼬옥 봐야하는 프로그램이라 생각됨.

Human Evolution:
PBS 'NOVA'에서 방송된 것을 DVD를 구입해서 어제 보았다. 아직 미흡하지만 화석의 계속된 발견으로, 인간의 계보가 상당히 틀이 잡혀 나가는 느낌이다.

다른 history 처럼, 'Natural History' 도 현재 남아있는 자료를 분석하여 가장 타당하다 여겨지는 과거를 재생하는 분야다. 무었보다도 어려운 점은, 시간이 너무 오래 흘러서, 제대로 된 증거자료 (주로 화석)가 너무 희박하여, 찾는데 시간이 오래 걸린다는 것.
더 많은 화석자료가 계속 추가될 것이다.  그리고 그러한 자료들이 갭을 메꾸어 나가면서, Human Evolution 의 과학적 토대를 만들어 나갈 것임엔 믿어 의심치 않는다.  Human Evolution 을 안 믿는 것은 개인의 취향이지만....

W. 휴스톤의 죽음

세상 수십억인구에 사람들 죽어 나가는 거이 비일비재지만....
오늘 신문에 Whitney Houston 죽음을 알리는 기사가 실렸다. 방년 48세의 생을 마감하고 영원한 휴식에 들어간것이다.
대학졸업 이후론 한국가수나 미국가수나 별관심이없어서 그저 학창시절 좋아하던 세시봉의 통기타가수나 그 당시 (70년대말~80년대초) 유행하던 팦 또는 컨츄리 가수들이 내가아는 전부라 해도 과언이 아닌데...
우연이 Houston 을 알게 된 것은 아래에 보이는 영화를 통해서 이다.

청순한 이미지에 풍부한 성량이 꽤 인상 깊었는데,
아니나 다를까, 그녀는 꽤 이름난 가수였다, 나만 몰라서 그랬지. ㅠㅠ
(영화에서) 그녀의 바디가드로 채용된 Costner.  언제나 그렇듯 Kevin 은 잘란 놈 역이다.



어쨌든, 그리 잘 나가던 그녀의 죽음은 많은 의문을 낳고있다. 드럭을 쫌 사용했다 하는데, 그것이 직접사인 인지는 autopsy 결과가 나와야 알 것 같다. 이유야 어쨌든 고인의 명복을 빈다. 이 또한 그녀의 팔짜가 아니겐는가!

시험

It's 11:10 am.  It is time to give students the first regular test.  For 75 min, students (mostly juniors and seniors) will do their best to find right answers.
Oh! This is kind of a live broadcasting of the classroom.  How fun!

While I am on the computer, one student just sent me an email from the iPhone, saying that she is a little late, but doesn't want to walk in because she might disturb other students.  How thoughtful!   Please take it after the class!!  Is this a simple excuse or real?  What if I don't access emails for a while??

After 30 min, two students already finished.  Hmm.  I wonder how good they did.  Did they study very hard and prepare the exam well?  Or are they just giving up?  Even if the former is the case, I hope, I think they should've read the questions again and make sure that they did not overlook anything.

After 40 min, 18 students were out.  Oh boy!  Was the exam too easy??  I squeezed my brain for a couple of days to make all these questions.  Was it really that easy???

@ 45 min 경과, even Laura finished it. Well actually 45 min is a reasonable period for good students.
@ 55 min 경과, 12 students are still working hard.

It's noon, and I suddenly feel hungry.

@ 60 min 경과, eight students (five men and three ladies) are resilient to this kind of stress.  Let's cheer for them!  It will be interesting to compare their grades to those who finished earlier.

Six more min to go and two men are still working.  I am starved to death.  I hope they finish it now.  Co-mon!!!
Down to one, and he is really persistent.  I appreciate his effort.

tick-tock tick-tock.  DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now I have 50 x 5 = 250 pages to grade. ㅠㅠ
